Canterbury Hotel – 1733 N St., NW 202-393-3000  Small, nice on a quiet side street off Connecticut Ave, near the Dupont Circle Metro.

Tabbard Inn – 1739 N St., NW 202-785-1277  Small. Next to the Canterbury.  Victorian.  Lots of professors stay there.  Nice restaurant.

Embassy Row Hilton Hotel – 2015 Massachusetts Ave, NW  202-265-1600  Almost on Dupont Circle near lots of embassies.  Lots of good restaurants around.

The Inn at Little Washington – Washington, VA Very, very expensive (fixed price menu - $90-125 per person without wine or tip).  Can stay there, also very expensive.  One of the top restaurants in the U.S.  Very rural.  About 1½ hours from DC.

EXPENSIVE BUT VERY GOOD

Kinkeads – 2000 Pennsylvania Ave.,NW 202-296-7700 Wonderful seafood.  In same area as GWU and Tower Records.

Galileo Restaurant – 1110 21st St.,NW 202-293-7191  Italian, near L St. Their wine list is very expensive.

Obelisk – 2029 P St.,NW 202-872-1180. Fixed price.  Menu choices are limited, but food is very fresh and good.  Small, no smoking. 

Gerard’s place – 915 15th St.,NW 202-7374445  French, very small, chef owned & operated.

Citronelle – 3000 M St., NW 202-625-2150.  French (from California). Very expensive.

LESS EXPENSIVE

La Colline – 400 N. Capitol St.,NW 202-737-0400.  French, near train station, good cooking at moderate prices.

Georgia Brown’s – 950 15th St.,NW 202-393-4499.  Southern, lots of politicians , both black and white, eat here.  Food like fried catfish, shrimp and grits, she-crab soup.

City Lights of China – 1731 Connecticut Ave.,NW  202-265-6688.  Chinese, not much atmosphere, but terrific food.  Above Dupont Circle.

The Grill from Ipanema – 1858 Columbia Rd.  202-986-0757.  Brazilian.  Less expensive, but a taxi ride from Dupont Circle.  Lively.
